Become a Mentor!
A mentor serves as a coach, role model, advocate, and FRIEND to a youth in need.
Why Mentor?
There are many ways to help the community, so why mentor? Research shows that a positive mentoring relationship can:
- Improve student attendance
- Improve the chance that youth will stay in school and attend college
- Reduce the chance that youth will initiate drug and alcohol use
- Reduce some negative behaviors
- Improve attitude towards school and the future
- Improve communication with parents
What Does A Mentor Do?
- Creates opportunities for students to develop skills to help achieve their goals
- Encourages students
- Serves as a role model and a friend
- Does not become responsible for student
- Does not criticize or try to change the student
- Does not fail if students don’t succeed
Time Commitment
Mentors meet with their mentees for an hour every week. Mentors pick the time and day during school that work best for them. Mentors must commit to meeting with their mentees throughout the school year (September-May).
What Do Mentors and Mentees Do Together?
You can help with schoolwork, play a game, have a conversation, draw, read a newspaper together, or come up with your own activity. There are plenty of things to do with your mentee! We provide all of our mentors with a manual full of activities in case you need ideas. Our manual includes icebreakers, stories to read together and discuss, puzzles, and worksheets you can use. You can access our manual here, or you can pick up a hard copy at our training session for mentors.
